Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing the right Rogowski coil size depends on both your conductor size and expected current range:

Coil Size Selection:

  • NRC-100 (100mm window): Ideal for cables up to 95mm diameter or small busbars – Rated current 1000A
  • NRC-150 (150mm window): Suitable for larger cables or medium busbars up to 145mm – Rated current 3000A
  • NRC-200 (200mm window): Perfect for large busbars or multiple cables up to 195mm – Rated current 6000A
  • NRC-300 (300mm window): Perfect for large busbars or multiple cables up to 295mm – Rated current 8000A

Why these are guidelines, not hard limits: Unlike a current transformer, a Rogowski coil has no iron core and therefore cannot saturate — the coil itself has no maximum current limit and cannot be damaged by overloads. The practical upper limit is set by the input range of the meter or integrator it is connected to, not by the coil size. So choose the window size to fit your conductor, and make sure your meter’s measuring range covers the current you expect

Minimum Current Guidelines: For optimal accuracy, we recommend measuring currents that are at least 5% of the coil’s rated current:

  • NRC-100: Best accuracy above 50A (minimum measurable ~10-20A)
  • NRC-150: Best accuracy above 150A (minimum measurable ~30-50A)
  • NRC-200: Best accuracy above 300A (minimum measurable ~60-100A)
  • NRC-300: Best accuracy above 400A (minimum measurable ~80-150A)

Important Notes:

  • Rogowski coils can technically measure currents below these minimums, but accuracy decreases as the signal-to-noise ratio becomes less favourable
  • For applications requiring measurement of very low currents, consider using a smaller coil size, even if your conductor could fit in a larger one
  • All our coils maintain excellent linearity and won’t be damaged by overloads
  • For applications requiring measurement of lower currents (below 1000A), consider our MRC series

As a rule of thumb, always use the smallest coils possible. For specific accuracy requirements or unique applications, please contact our technical support team for personalised recommendations.

No, but UL-certified coils are available. However, the price for UL-certified coils is double the standard coil price. Product SKU: ULNRC-100

First, we need to confirm whether the 6kV circuits are sheathed cables or bare copper busbars:

If it is a sheathed cable:
All our standard Rogowski coils can be directly applied for current measurement, since the cable’s sheath provides basic insulation protection.

If it is a bare copper busbar:
Special high-voltage Rogowski coils dedicated to 6.6kV systems are required,  as they have higher insulation levels to adapt to the exposed high-voltage environment.

The default cable length is two meters; if you require a longer cable, it can be specially ordered and manufactured. The maximum length is 5 meters.

The maximum length is 5 meters; if the cable is longer than that, you will start to get inaccurate readings. The reason for this is that the Rogowski coils output very small voltages, typically 50 mV per 1000A. So if the cable is too long, you get voltage drops and interference.

What is a Rogowski coil?

Rogowski coils have been used for the detection and measurement of electric currents. They are based on a simple principle: an “air-cored” coil is placed around the conductor in a toroidal fashion, and the magnetic field produced by the current induces a voltage in the coil. The voltage output is proportional to the rate of change of current. This voltage is integrated, thus producing an output proportional to the current. By using precision winding techniques, especially developed for the purpose, the coils are manufactured so that their output is not influenced by the position of the conductor within the toroid, and to reject interference from external magnetic fields caused, for example, by nearby conductors. Basically, a Rogowski coil current measuring system consists of a combination of a coil and conditioning electronics.

They can be used in similar circumstances to CTs (current transformers), but for many applications, they have considerable advantages:

  • Wide dynamic range.
  • High linearity.
  • Very useful with large size or awkwardly shaped conductors or in places with limited access.
  • Thanks to the structure without a hard core, the coil can be easily manufactured according to the application or to the available space.
  • Unlike traditional current transducers, there is no danger from open-circuited secondaries.
  • They cannot be damaged by large overloads.
  • They are non-intrusive.
  • They draw no power from the main circuit carrying the current to be measured.
  • They are also lightweight and, in some applications, are light enough to be suspended on the conductor being measured.
